Elaine Woo MacGregor: Hotel and Icon Series
Artists statement, April 2006
The figurative works from 2003 to early 2006 share this interest in theatricality and suggestive quality in the use of figure and space. The works were mostly of hotel and bar interiors. The early Hotel series addressed female identity, working with visual subliminal narratives. Later the male figure was introduced engaging in various kinds of intimate conversations or activity, to explore feelings of uncertainty and visual drama. I often use people directly from my personal life, affording me the opportunity to observe, interpret and mediate their natural expressions, body language and characteristics.
My sources vary from on-site drawings of theatre, hotels and bars, images from newspapers and fashion magazines, films by Wong Kar Wai to particular works by old masters and contemporary Artists. My early work was largely influenced by old masters; Goya, Velazquez, Watteau, Dorothea Tanning and from a more contemporary angle, artists such as Marlene Dumas, Anna Gaskell and Sam Taylor Wood.
